Pulsar is an MMO real-time strategy game that wishes to give players a gaming experience otherwise not seen in other Web 3 games. Built by 12 Random Words, Pulsar is designed using three specific aspects in mind: a fun gaming experience, making the game completely accessible in every aspect, and a game that could add value to the gamers and the world.

Set in an imaginative Sci-Fi world, the world of Pulsar is believed to have the technology, intelligence, and resources that far outpaced human civilization. An independent empire dedicated its resources to deciphering and finding the source of the signal sent by the advanced civilization. For centuries, the empire has been colonizing planet after planet just to get closer to the signal.

The game is set on planet W12R, which is one of the last planetariums before the Pulsar system. The empire decided to settle on the planet and further advance its technological capabilities. Terra scans revealed that the planet is infested with aliens and contains loads of wealth. The goal of the game is to mine and extract resources, refine raw materials, build and craft structures, battle aliens and other players, and basically become the most powerful territory on Pulsar.

When talking about MMO games, we usually think of games like World of WarCraft, Final Fantasy, and other similar games. Games like these usually have a great storyline and have hooked a lot of gamers for decades. The developers, being gamers themselves, had the goal of designing Pulsar to be as fun as the games they played. They have equipped Pulsar with a great storyline to back it up and some stunning AAA graphics that will attract players to play the game more.

One of the problems the developers have seen in web 3 games is its restrictive access to gamers. This is why Pulsar is a Forever Free-to-Play game to make it more accessible to everyone who wants to experience the game. Additionally, the target of the game is not gamers from the web 3 space but “Gamers” in general. Pulsar aims to be the game that could seamlessly transition web 2 gamers into the web 3 space by removing all the unnecessary processes just to play a game.

The land of Pulsar has a lot of resources to mine and extract. There are 12 resource types and raw $PLSR used as in-game currency and base materials for crafting and building. The goal is to expand your empire and be the most powerful. Apart from mining and extracting resources to help you reach that goal, players must also remember the treacherous nature of Pulsar. Players must defeat aliens and complete missions in the PVE (Player vs Environment) game mode. Players can also engage in combat with other players in the PVP (Player vs Player) game mode.

If you want to see more in-depth gameplay, there’s a video on their official YouTube Channel.

Pulsar, having the vision of making a game that can accommodate both web 2 and web 3 gamers, will have two types of players, free players, and premium players.

Free Players

As the name suggests, free players are the ones who play the game without owning any NFTs. Pulsar will forever be free-to-play, which means players could have fun without buying any NFTs or $PLSR. However, free players will be limited in the speed of the progress and there will be a maximum amount of $PLSR and materials they can mine. Alternatively, free players borrow NFTs from other players to progress.

Premium Players

Although free players can access the world of Pulsar, they are unable to transfer assets like their Units, Land, or $PLSR. Additionally, the earnings of free players will be shared by land owners. Premium players are the ones who own assets in the game such as Land and NFTs that can be used to mine $PLSR. If you’re someone who wants to take Pulsar seriously and wants to produce liquidity out of it, being a Premium Player is something that you might want to consider.

Playstyles

Players of Pulsar can participate in the game and adopt different playstyles: Miners, Builders, or Warlords. Miners, Builders, and Warlords each need to play a key role to conquer and thrive in the world of Pulsar. That means each playstyle is important to the success of the team. A player can choose more than one playstyle, but for those that like to min/max their gameplay, choosing one particular playstyle to focus on will reap more benefits over time in terms of progress.

  • MINERS

To build and upgrade in Pulsar, one must have sufficient materials and resources. Miners are the ones who are focused on obtaining and supplying materials to other player roles. Miners collect unrefined materials and Pulsar. Miners are also the ones who refine unrefined materials to factory materials.

  • BUILDERS

A builder is a role in Pulsar that uses factory materials to build NFTs. Builders research and sell factories and NFTs. Basically, if one wants to have better mining rigs or combat units, approaching a builder is the way to go.

  • WARLORDS

Warlords are the more competitive roles in Pulsar. Their specialty is combat and clearing mobs in an area. Participating in Pulsar with this role will require a lot of skill as other roles will mostly rely on Warlords when facing large waves of mobs. Warlords through playing the game will be able to unlock production boosters and unit materials, which they can sell in the marketplace to builders to produce better units or to miners to increase mining production.

Each of these playstyles are important cogs in the machine that is Pulsar’s economy. But the division of these roles allows Pulsar to be a player-driven economy where players must rely on each other to further advance in the game. This is a novel way to apply NFTs into the game and create a truly functional use for them.

LAND

There are four types of land (or Biomes) in Pulsar, the Barren Sands, Glacier Wastelands, Obsidian Badlands, and Crimson Hollows. There are several attributes that one must consider before purchasing land or mining one.

The size of the land will dictate how much $PLSR it can contain and how much motherships and units can operate on the land. $PLSR quantity and resources also vary from one land to another. The types of resources in the land can be extracted via mining and are subdivided into different classes of rarity: Common, Uncommon, and Rare.

Security rating in the PvE game mode should also be considered. This determines the spawn rate of mobs on your land and the number of resources in your land. A High-security rating means that fewer mobs will be deployed but a lesser amount of resources will be available. A Mid-security rating would mean a perfect ratio between mob spawns and resource availability. Lastly is none or no security rating. Lands with no security rating mean players must be prepared to have an all-out war with the mobs but, a high return rate on resources.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to priority. Are you the type of person who wants to play the game safe and protect your investments or are you the type of person who wants to go all-out and have a crazy adventure in the game and have a potentially high return?

BUILDINGS

Buildings are assets in the game that refine raw materials, manufacture Unit NFTs, and allow players to research and upgrade their NFTs. Upon launch, The Genesis Pulsar Refineries will be the only refineries that can convert raw pulsar into $PLSR tokens, and Resource refineries will convert raw materials into on-chain resource tokens.

UNITS

In Pulsar, Unit NFTs are the star of the show. Unit NFTs are the robots that make the game exciting and desirable. Unit NFTs are used for mining and engaging in combat. There are several types of Unit NFTs all according to different uses.

There are units used to extract resources from lands and transport them to refineries, such as workers and land transport. Combat units, on the other hand, are used to defend the land from aliens and mobs and are also used to participate in multiplayer combat. Spider Tanks are a type of combat unit that is the most common infantry unit in Pulsar. Spider Tanks can be upgraded and customized to make them more powerful and valuable.

Exploration is another crucial factor when conquering the world of Pulsar. Drones are units specifically designed for this matter.

Motherships are unit NFTs that essentially control the amount of Unit NFT present in your land. The higher the level of Mothership, the more Unit a player can have in the land.

Mobile Depots are unit NFTs that improve productivity by shuttling raw resources to refineries.

There are also structures more focused on storing or production, such as warehouses and refineries. Defensive and offensive structures, such as defense turrets, are also present to defend your base.

Command Centers are structures that power all other stations and have the capability of teleporting units to your space station.

RESOURCES

$PLSR

  • $PLSR is the primary currency of Pulsar. It can be obtained whenever players mine raw pulsar and convert them into a $PLSR token via refineries.

In-Game resources

  • There are various resources that can be extracted from the land. These resources can be mined and can also be obtained when we slay an enemy. Unrefined resources obtained through mining and slaying can be refined into on-chain tokens such as $GAS.

Pulsar is another game hoping to reinvent web 3 gaming. Having the idea of making it accessible to everybody is a first in web 3 gaming. Triple-A graphics, a great storyline, and fantastic gameplay are just some of the attributes needed to make a great game. Pulsar could be the perfect game for web 2 gamers hoping to transition to web 3, but then again, we’ll only find out once the game is fully launched. Despite that, Pulsar is surely a game to look out for, for the remaining months of this year.
